The Best Evening Routine for Writers in 2025: 11 Steps to Unwind and Boost Creativity
As a creative, your brain is constantly buzzing with ideas, revisions, and deadlines. But without a solid evening routine, your creative energy can quickly burn out. The way you wind down at night directly impacts your ability to show up fresh and inspired the next day.
Here’s my updated nighttime routine for writers that I use to reset, relax, and recharge my creativity. I hope you enjoy it, too. I love an evening routine because it signals to my brain that we’re slowing down for the night. In addition to a spa-like skincare routine in the evenings, I also try to follow the list below on a nightly basis.
An Evening Routine for Writers
Tidy Up Your Workspace
A clean desk equals a clear mind. Before logging off for the night, put away clutter, organize your notes, and create a welcoming space for tomorrow’s writing session.
Save and Back up Your Manuscript
Don’t let a tech glitch erase your hard work! Save your draft, back it up to the cloud, and consider using an auto-save tool like Google Drive or Scrivener.
Hydrate with a Special Water
Pour a glass of ice, cold water and add a lemon slice or a pinch of sea salt to replenish your hydration and boost brain function for the next day. If you like electrolyte packets like I do, try the LMNT “citrus salt” flavor. It’s my favorite! I add one packet to my water every day.
Step Outside for 30 Minutes (Without Screens)
Fresh air + a digital detox = the perfect creative reset. Whether you take a short walk around your neighborhood or just sit on your patio, being outdoors helps clear mental chatter.
Nourish Your Body with a Balanced Dinner
Your brain needs proper fuel. Opt for a protein-rich meal with healthy fats like salmon, avocado, or quinoa to stabilize your energy levels overnight.
Take a Hot Bath or Shower to Reset
A warm soak relaxes tense muscles and signals to your brain that it’s time to wind down. Add epsom salts for extra relaxation.
Journal Any Lingering Thoughts from the Day
Writing out your worries, ideas, or what you’re grateful for can help clear mental space and prevent overthinking before bed.
Settle in with a Cup of Tea + Light Reading
Herbal teas like chamomile or valerian root support deep sleep. Pair it with a low-stakes, feel-good book (skip the intense thrillers or business reads).
Reduce Screen Time Before Bed
Blue light disrupts sleep cycles. Try red-light filters, use a Kindle with warm light, or swap scrolling for journaling or meditation.
Diffuse Lavender Oil for a Sleep-Ready Atmosphere
Aromatherapy can enhance relaxation. Lavender, chamomile, or cedarwood essential oils promote restful sleep and ease creative burnout.
Meditate to Quiet Your Mind
A 5-minute meditation or breathwork session can help transition from a busy brain to deep rest. Apps like Insight Timer or Headspace offer great guided meditations.
Bonus Tip: Try a Brain Dump for Writers
If creative ideas tend to keep you up at night, keep a brain dump notebook by your bed to jot down any random thoughts before you sleep. That way, you won’t feel the urge to reach for your phone.
